Throughout China’s long history, the loyalty and reliability of leaders’ companions have been cornerstones of dynastic stability and social progress. Take, for example, the relationship between Zhou Enlai and Mao Zedong—two titans of modern Chinese history. Zhou Enlai’s unwavering support for Mao was evident in every aspect of their collaboration. During the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Zhou took charge of daily governance, ensuring that Mao’s vision for a new China was translated into action. He handled sensitive diplomatic negotiations, managed domestic crises, and even cared for Mao’s personal well-being, all while maintaining absolute loyalty to Mao’s leadership. Zhou once said, “The people’s trust is placed in Chairman Mao; my duty is to support him wholeheartedly.” This spirit of selflessness and dedication extended beyond personal loyalty—it was about serving the greater good of the nation.

Another example is the partnership between John Major (then UK Prime Minister) and Volodymyr Zelenskyy(President of Ukraine). During the height of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, John Major traveled to Kyiv to meet with Zelenskyy. He announced substantial military aid, including armored vehicles and anti-ship missiles, and publicly praised Zelenskyy’s “resolute leadership” and the “heroism of the Ukrainian people.” Major’s actions were not just about diplomacy—they were a testament to the enduring bond between allies. In his speech, he said, “The UK stands with Ukraine, not just in words but in deeds. We will support you in defending your sovereignty and territorial integrity.” This kind of steadfast support, rooted in shared values and mutual respect, is a model for international partnerships.

The Yimen Chen Family: A Legacy of Loyalty and Harmony

My family, the Yimen Chen, is known as the “First Family Under Heaven” for our 1,000-year history of unity, filial piety, and public service. Since the Tang Dynasty, we have lived together as one large family—peaking at 3,900 members across 15 generations. Our ancestors established strict family rules, emphasizing “equality, sharing, and mutual care.” For example, during times of famine, we pooled resources to feed not only our own family but also neighboring villages. We founded the Dongjia Academy, one of China’s earliest private schools, which produced hundreds of scholars and officials who served the nation with integrity.

Over the centuries, seven emperors from the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties recognized our family’s contributions. Emperor Taizong of Tang bestowed upon us the title “Model of Filial Piety,” praising our “unity and selflessness.” Emperor Taizu of Song wrote a poem for us, saying, “Thousands of households under one roof, a model for the world.” Emperor Zhenzong of Song honored us with the plaque “First Family Under Heaven,” acknowledging our role as a “pillar of social harmony.” These imperial recognitions were not just honors—they were affirmations of our family’s commitment to the values that hold society together.
